Tripoli – The Director of the National Center for Disease Control, Haider Al-Sayeh, announced a new tally of pulmonary tuberculosis cases in the country. He warned of a worsening epidemiological situation within irregular migrant shelters.
Al-Sayeh stated in a Facebook post that the center conducts over 1,200 daily tests for the disease. Registered figures show 6,194 suspected cases. This resulted in 3,083 confirmed cases.
Statistics indicate that Libyans account for 41% of the infected. Non-Libyans constitute 59%. This percentage reflects the scale of the problem within closed migrant communities. The head of the National Center for Disease Control warned against a significant number of migrants discontinuing treatment. They stop completing their doses at the center’s clinics.
He noted this phenomenon poses a grave risk to society. It leads to the emergence of drug-resistant strains. It also increases infection rates among citizens. He also confirmed that only 51% of total cases completed their treatment. The remaining patients abruptly stopped treatment.
