Addis Ababa – Presidential Council Head Mohammed Al-Menfi stated Africa is a pivotal human and economic force. It holds this position within the international system. However, it is the only continent without permanent representation on the Security Council.
Al-Menfi made these remarks during a special working session. The Committee of Ten on Security Council reform held the session. It took place in Addis Ababa, the Ethiopian capital. This is part of African efforts to enhance the continent’s presence within the United Nations system.
Al-Menfi affirmed Africa’s growing role in the global economy. This role is based on its resources and vitality in international trade. It also stems from its rapid demographic growth. Furthermore, African communities are widely spread globally. They have made historical contributions to human progress.
He called for adherence to the Sirte Declaration and the Ezulwini Agreement. These express the unified African position. They aim to rectify historical injustice against Africa. They also seek fair and equitable representation within the United Nations. This includes two permanent seats with full privileges. It also requests two additional non-permanent seats. This aligns with Africa’s status and growing international influence.
The Presidential Council Head emphasized that the unified African position is a fundamental pillar. It cannot be compromised. Security Council reform is an urgent necessity. This is needed to achieve greater balance and fairness within the international system. It must reflect global geopolitical and economic shifts.
Libya participates in this meeting as a founding member of the committee. Since its inception, Libya has made tangible progress. This progress relates to negotiations on African Union demands. It is based on the Sirte Declaration and the Ezulwini Consensus. This reflects the shared political will of African nations. They aim to reshape the balance within the international system.
