Sulug – The Fourth Libyan Open Falconry Championship began. It is taking place in the Wadi Al-Bab area of Sulug city. The competition is held at Field Marshal Khalifa Haftar Square. A wide range of falconers and enthusiasts are participating. They come from various Libyan cities and clubs. This national event highlights the growing interest in traditional heritage sports. It also focuses on preserving Libya’s cultural heritage. This heritage is linked to falconry and traditional hunting.
The championship saw competitors participate in several approved categories. These included Al-Saqr, Al-Shaheen, Al-Jair Shaheen, and Al-Pure. The Libyan Heritage Authority oversees and organizes the event. Lieutenant General Saddam Khalifa Haftar provides support and sponsorship. He is the Deputy Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces. His backing helped ensure the success of this heritage gathering.
The championship competitions will continue for two consecutive days. The first day was dedicated to the Al-Saqr and Al-Shaheen categories. Tomorrow, the Al-Jair Shaheen and Al-Pure categories will compete. Participants are strongly vying for top positions in each category. They also aim to qualify for the final stage of the Libya Falconry Cup qualifiers.
In an exclusive statement to the Libyan News Agency, the head of the Libyan Heritage Authority confirmed the championship’s launch. He noted its generous patronage by Staff Lieutenant General Saddam Haftar. General Haftar is the Deputy Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces. This edition extends the Authority’s efforts to support heritage sports. It also seeks to enhance their national presence. This is achieved by organizing regular championships. These championships follow advanced technical and organizational standards.
The head of the Authority clarified that 20 competitors will qualify for the Libya Cup. These qualifiers will come from all participating categories. The categories are Al-Saqr, Al-Shaheen, Al-Jair Shaheen, and Al-Pure. He stressed the Authority’s commitment to developing future championships. This will be done by leveraging past seasons’ experiences. They will also improve the efficiency of organization and arbitration. This ensures the continuity of this ancient heritage sport.
