Libya – Former General National Congress member Nadia Al-Rashed warned of dangers. She highlighted using religion, fatwas, and jurisprudential opinions in the economic sector. This occurs amid Libya’s ongoing political conflict. She believes these practices have gone beyond theoretical debate. They now directly impact citizens’ lives.
Al-Rashed told Asharq Al-Awsat newspaper. The danger is not merely the politicization of fatwas. It also lies in their practical consequences for Libyans. Some interpretations are now used as tools for pressure or direction within the economy. This exacerbates confusion and instability.
She added that this phenomenon is not new. It has recurred for years since the 2011 conflict. Various parties have been involved. This has fueled division and deepened polarization. It happened instead of promoting solutions that serve the public interest.
Al-Rashid emphasized the need for new approaches. These approaches must separate religious, political, and economic matters. This will help address crises for the public good. It will also limit the use of fatwas in conflict situations.
