The United Nations’ Special Envoy to Libya, Stephanie Williams, arrived in Tripoli on Sunday to assume the role after her predecessor Ján Kubiš resigned a few weeks ago for health reasons, the U.N. Mission announced.
“Williams will work with Libyan actors to help them sustain the momentum created for national elections by the unprecedented voter registration turnout, successful distribution of voters cards, and registration of a high number of presidential and parliamentary candidates,” the Mission said in a statement.
Williams had been deputy to former U.N. Envoy to Libya Ghassan Salamé and went on to be Acting U.N. Envoy after the latter’s resignation in March 2020.
She served in this position until Kubis was appointed as the new U.N. Envoy in January 2021.
