Southern Libya representatives complain to UN government’s marginalization of the region

UN Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) Officer-in-Charge Raisedon Zenenga received Wednesday a delegation of the House of Representatives (HoR) members and activists from southern Libya, who conveyed their concern about marginalization and neglect of the South and called for an investigation into Monday’s fuel tanker explosion.
The delegation requested UNSMIL’s support in advocating for a fair distribution of resources across the country and greater inclusion of southern Libyans in political processes, governance mechanisms and national institutions, according to UNSMIL.

Zenenga stressed that national elections, which should be held as soon as possible as demanded by the 2.8M Libyans who registered to vote, would yield legitimate, inclusive, and accountable institutions that prioritize the issues raised by the delegation, UNSMIL tweeted.

He offered condolences to the families of those killed in the blast and wished the injured a speedy recovery. He explained ongoing UN efforts to address concerns of the people in the South, and encouraged the delegates to also raise their voices through appropriate avenues, the Mission said.

Zenenga expressed UNSMIL’s concern about the delegation’s report that an air ambulance dispatched to provide medical evacuation of victims injured during Monday’s fuel tanker accident was not permitted to land. He supported the delegation’s call for a full investigation, it added.
