The Security Council on Tuesday expressed deep concern over the persistent political deadlock in Libya almost one year after elections scheduled for Dec. 24, 2021, failed to materialize, and more than two years after the agreement of the Libyan Political Dialogue Forum roadmap.

The new U.N. special envoy for Libya warned Tuesday that the first anniversary of Libya’s postponed elections is quickly approaching and that further delaying a vote could lead the troubled north African nation to even greater instability, putting it “at risk of partition.”
Abdul Hamid Dbeibeh, prime minister of the Tripoli-based government, said on Friday that his executive authority is a “fundamental part of the last transitional stage before going to the elections”.
The government of Fathi Bashagha, designated by the House of Representatives, welcomed on Saturday the U.N. Security Council Resolution 2656.
The UN Security Council has adopted a resolution to extend the mandate of the UN Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) for a year, till October 31, 2023.
UN Special envoy to Libya Abdoulaye Bathily said in his remarks to Security Council Monday that the political deadlock persists with no clear end in sight to the prolonged stalemate over the executive authority.
The Security Council will convene Monday, October 24, for an open briefing, followed by closed consultations, on the U.N. Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL), according to a statement by the council.
The United Nations Security Council will meet on Friday, October 21, to discuss developments in the situation in Libya and to renew the mandate of the U.N. Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL), which is due at the end of the month, according to the council’s agenda.
The U.N. Security Council renewed for another year its authorization for Member States to inspect vessels on the high seas off Libya’s coast that they have reasonable grounds to suspect are being used for migrant smuggling and human trafficking from that country, and to seize those vessels that are confirmed as being used for those purposes.
The United Nations Security Council will convene on Thursday morning, September 29, to hold consultations on Libya, according to the council’s agenda.
