Strasbourg – The European Parliament approved a strict package of measures on Thursday. These measures aim to regulate the immigration file. They include supporting the creation of ‘return centers’. These centers will be located outside the EU borders. Their purpose is to transfer irregular migrants there. Their situations will be processed away from EU territories.
This step received support from most member states. It also had backing from right-wing and far-right MEPs. These MEPs welcomed the voting results in the parliament hall.
These measures are part of a broader European trend. This trend aims to reshape migration policies. Member states face increasing pressure. This is due to migrant flows, especially across the Mediterranean Sea.
Sea-Watch previously revealed a leaked document. The document proposed establishing safe zones outside the EU. Migrants rescued or intercepted at sea would be received there. They would then be transferred to specialized centers. These centers would process their asylum applications.
According to the proposals, maritime operations will be conducted. These operations will intercept or rescue migrants. They will take place in areas controlled by coastal states outside the EU. Migrants will then be transferred to reception centers. Asylum applications will be processed in third countries. The European Commission describes this as ‘innovative solutions’. The goal is to curb irregular migration.
This aligns with a new five-year European strategy. The strategy focuses on tightening visa procedures. It also strengthens partnerships with origin and transit countries. This comes in exchange for financial and technical border control support. The strategy includes mechanisms to pressure countries. These countries refuse to repatriate their deported citizens.
European officials confirmed the policy’s aim. It seeks to balance curbing irregular migration. It also aims to protect refugees and attract skilled workers. All available tools will be used to regulate entry and residency. This applies within the European Union.
