Benghazi – The Libyan government’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs summoned the Greek Consul. Athanasios Anastopoulos and his deputy were called in. The summons followed recent statements by Greek officials. Libya considered these remarks an infringement on its sovereignty and national interests.
Minister of Foreign Affairs Dr. Abdulhadi Al-Hweij met with the consul at the ministry’s headquarters in Benghazi. He conveyed Libya’s official rejection of the statements. The remarks were described as irresponsible.
The minister gave the consul an official protest note. It was the Libyan government’s statement No. (32), dated December 8, 2025. The statement protests any interference affecting Libya’s sovereignty or its independent decision-making.
During the meeting, the minister affirmed that Libya’s sovereignty and the interests of its people are a red line. He stressed Libya’s desire for balanced international relations. These relations must be based on equality, mutual respect, and non-interference in internal affairs.
The minister urged the Greek side to moderate its statements. He called on them to avoid provocative positions that could harm relations between the two countries.
The acting director of Consular Affairs attended the meeting. Also present were the director of the Benghazi Protocol Office, the director of Land and Maritime Borders, and a representative from the European Department.
