UN Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) Officer-in-Charge and Mission Coordinator Raisedon Zenenga met in Tripoli Tuesday with the five western members of the 5+5 Joint Military Commission (5+5 JMC).
The meeting came after Zenenga’s discussions with the eastern members of the JMC in Benghazi last week about the measures announced in their statement of 9 April, including a decision to suspend their work, according to UNSMIL.
Zenenga conveyed to the five western members of the JMC the concerns of their eastern counterparts about the current situation and the impact on livelihoods in the East, UNSMIL tweeted.
The five western JMC members informed Mr. Zenenga about their own recent engagement with the eastern JMC members and their efforts to have some of their requests addressed, the Mission pointed out.
They expressed hope that the work of the JMC would soon resume and expressed concern about the implications of the measures announced by the eastern members, including the shutdown of oil production which has now been implemented, it added.
The western members of the JMC expressed their high esteem for their eastern counterparts and stressed the importance of avoiding politicization of the work of the JMC which could undermine the collective achievements of the 5+5 JMC, said UNSMIL.
Zenenga reaffirmed UNSMIL’s commitment to continuing efforts to facilitate a solution to the issues raised by the eastern JMC which are now placing the work of the JMC and the progress made on the security track at risk, the UN Mission noted out.
