UN Envoy to Libya Abdoulaye Bathily has confirmed that he has secured agreements with the country’s security and military parties to ensure the electoral process is secure. Bathily said that all parties in the country have expressed their willingness to abide by the criteria necessary to hold elections.
He noted that he had secured the agreement of security and military parties to renounce violence, release detainees, and ensure inclusive national reconciliation. Bathily highlighted that elections would be “a unique opportunity to mobilize the entire national community towards a common goal.”
During a briefing to the UN Security Council on Tuesday, Bathily remarked, “The electoral process is a unique and unique opportunity to mobilize the entire national community, to ensure that the elections are held in peace, in an inclusive, free, and fair manner, in order to pave the way for achieving all the benefits.”
He added that his consultations with all Libyan parties had led to a commitment to prepare to discuss the criteria for holding elections, and he urged for this commitment to be translated into concrete steps on the ground.
