The United Nations and Libya’s Presidential Council agreed on Wednesday to “maintain calm and unity in the current climate of polarization,” said U.N. Advisor on Libya Stephanie Williams.
Williams’ remarks came following her meeting with Mohamed Menfi, chairman of the Presidential Council, during which she briefed him on the Joint House of Representatives and High Council of State Committee that that convened in Cairo last week to reach a consensual constitutional framework for the elections.
The U.N. diplomat also stated that she agreed with Menfi to “maintain calm and unity” as the country faces political and economic escalation after protestors shut down several major oilfields in the county to push for the dismissal of outgoing prime minister Abdul Hamid Dbeibeh who refuses to hand over power.
“I noted that Libya’s oil wealth is the birth right of the Libyan people and that the production of oil should not be politicized while the revenues of this oil must be managed and distributed in a completely transparent and equitable fashion,” Williams said.
