UNICEF signed on Sunday a work plan with Libya’s Ministry of Interior to “strengthen child protection systems and justice for children in Libya,” according to a statement by the UN agency.
UNICEF said the work plan “represents a major step forward in bringing Libya’s juvenile justice processes in line with international standards.”
Key elements of the work plan include: developing specialized standards and guidelines, building workforce capacity through training initiatives, harmonizing Family and Child Protection Units with dedicated staff, procedures and oversight mechanisms.
“The goals are to enhance the quality and coordination of protection services for children,” UNICEF said. The plan also aims to reform the national child justice system in line with the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child.
