Tripoli – The Geographic and Environmental Systems Department of the Ministry of Environment announced its findings. The year 2025 recorded record-breaking heat. Global average temperatures exceeded +1.5 degrees Celsius for the first time. This was above pre-industrial levels. Fares Fathi is the department director. He spoke to the Libyan News Agency. Data from the European Copernicus Climate Monitoring Service was cited. It placed 2025 among the three hottest years on record. Records began in 1940. The years 2024 and 2023 were hotter. This reflects an unprecedented acceleration in global warming. Most regions worldwide saw significant temperature increases. North Africa, Europe, and Asia were particularly affected. This explains the warm and dry winter of 2025–2026. Unprecedented temperature anomalies were recorded at both the North and South Poles. Fathi warned of accelerated ice melt. This will lead to rising sea levels. Widespread changes in storm and wind patterns are also expected. Fathi stressed these developments threaten global agriculture. Water resources are also at risk. He called for intensified international efforts. These efforts should reduce emissions. They should also enhance adaptation plans for climate change impacts.
