Tripoli – The Head of the Government of National Unity, Abdul Hamid Dbeibeh, announced a major project. It is one of the largest maritime infrastructure initiatives in Libya’s history. This involves a strategic partnership to develop and expand the Misrata Free Zone port terminal. Investments total 2.7 billion dollars. Qatari, Italian, and Swiss companies are participating. MSC, the world’s largest shipping company, leads the consortium. The goal is to raise the port’s capacity to 4 million containers annually.

Dbeibeh commented on the project via a social media post on Sunday. He stated it will significantly boost Libya’s standing among regional ports. This applies to both size and capacity. The project relies on direct foreign investment. It is part of an integrated international partnership. This partnership will oversee development and operations. Clear arrangements are in place. This ensures project execution without extra burden on the state budget. It reflects a national strategy. This strategy focuses on productive external financing. It aims to stimulate the economy. It will modernize infrastructure. It will also transform state assets into sustainable revenue platforms.

According to Dbeibeh, the project is expected to generate annual operating revenues. These revenues are estimated at 500 million dollars. It will create 8,400 direct job opportunities. Additionally, it will provide around 60,000 indirect jobs. The project positions Libya at the center of Western Mediterranean logistics competition. It also improves access to African markets. This will support regional trade.
