Tripoli – Abdul Hamid Dbeibeh, Prime Minister of the Government of National Unity and Minister of Defense, met on Wednesday with Lieutenant General Jon W. Brennan. Brennan is the Deputy Commander of the U.S. Africa Command (AFRICOM). They discussed enhancing military and security cooperation between their countries. Talks included developing training and rehabilitation programs. They also focused on supporting efforts to unify the military institution. Joint coordination in information exchange and capacity building was also discussed.
Jeremy Berndt, the Chargé d’Affaires at the U.S. Embassy in Libya, attended the meeting. The Undersecretary of the Ministry of Defense was also present. The Director of Military Intelligence also participated.
The government’s media office quoted Dbeibeh. He confirmed the importance of partnership with the United States. This partnership supports stability. It also enhances the readiness of regular military institutions. Dbeibeh stressed that cooperation must focus on transferring expertise. It should also raise technical efficiency. This serves the state’s sovereignty and security.
AFRICOM’s Deputy Commander expressed his country’s readiness. He offered to continue joint work with the Ministry of Defense. He also offered to expand technical and training support. This aims to enhance security and stability in Libya and the region.
