Libya – Libyan political analyst Moatasem Al-Shaari stated that unresolved security issues are the main cause of political stagnation in Libya. He emphasized that political disputes will not be resolved until the security situation is addressed first. This is considered the true starting point for tackling other crises. Al-Shaari made these remarks in special statements to Sputnik agency.
Al-Shaari explained that addressing the security situation would end a large part of the disputes. These disputes are between political parties vying for power.
He described current political meetings and dialogues as a “storm in a teacup.” These transient meetings will not lead to real solutions. They will not guide Libyans out of the crisis. He anticipates continued political stagnation.
Al-Shaari affirmed that the ongoing conflict between the House of Representatives and the High Council of State, along with associated political bickering, will not lead to consensus. Instead, it has directly contributed to prolonging the Libyan crisis. He believes most previous meetings aimed to prolong the crisis, not to resolve it.
He pointed out that no progress will be achieved without a genuine political will for a solution. The situation remains hostage to interventions by the UN mission and other countries. Some nations benefit from Libya’s current state of fragmentation and division.
Al-Shaari also confirmed direct external interventions in the Libyan file. He noted that some countries have military forces on Libyan soil. He cited the recent extension by the Turkish Parliament for Turkish forces to remain in Libya for two additional years. He described this as a “blatant intervention” in Libyan affairs.
He called on all Libyan parties to work towards halting these interventions. Such actions do not serve Libya’s interest. They rather serve the interests of nations that view Libya as a “cake” to be divided. These nations treat the Libyan file like a ball they toss among themselves.
Regarding a potential scenario to break the stagnation, Al-Shaari believes the solution lies in comprehensive parliamentary and presidential elections. He warned that continued political stagnation and deteriorating economic conditions could lead Libya towards “the abyss.” He anticipates citizens taking to the streets and squares. This might even lead to civil disobedience. This is due to public discontent with current political figures and procrastination policies.
He stressed that Libyans might break the barrier of fear. Large numbers could emerge to demand the departure of political bodies. These bodies pursue policies aimed at remaining in power for as long as possible. He emphasized the necessity for Libyans to take matters into their own hands. They should not await any solutions imposed from abroad.
