Libyan academic Jamila Bin Issa spoke about high divorce rates. She is a fact-checker at the “She Verifies” platform. This platform champions Libyan women’s rights. Bin Issa attributed the high rates to several factors. Social reasons are a major cause. Libya has a tribal society. Marriages are often arranged by families. Parents frequently choose the spouses. This can lead to unequal partnerships. Such marriages are prone to collapse. Bin Issa shared these insights with Sputnik Agency.
She reiterated that arranged marriages often happen. Parental choice is common in tribal societies. This can indeed lead to imbalanced unions. These unions are often doomed to fail.
Bin Issa also cited political and security situations. Areas experiencing clashes and tensions are particularly affected. Some families have been forced to marry off underage daughters. She believes these early marriages ultimately fail.
