House of Representatives member Rabia Bouras stated the Al-Karimiya market is the country’s main wholesale source. It provides food, medicine, and other basic necessities.
In a post on her official Facebook account, Bouras said the market needs serious intervention from the Central Bank of Libya. The Central Bank provides the market with letters of credit. She noted that goods are sold to merchants at the parallel market exchange rate. The dollar is valued at approximately 9 dinars in these transactions.
Bouras emphasized the need for oversight at the Al-Karimiya market. She called for supervision by the Food and Drug Control Center, the National Security Council, and the Municipal Guard. She demanded these agencies intervene to stop violations.
She questioned when these bodies would combat market and merchant corruption. Bouras also asked when they would protect citizens from the effects of the wholesale and currency markets.
