House of Representatives: The attack on the Russian tanker is maritime terrorism that necessitates emergency measures to protect Libyan oil installations

The House of Representatives’ Defense and National Security Committee issued a statement. The statement concerned the security implications of the Russian gas tanker. This tanker drifted off the city of Zuwara. The committee affirmed that this incident is not merely an environmental threat. It also constitutes a blatant violation of Libyan national security. It raises serious questions. These questions are about protecting national sovereignty. They also concern combating maritime terrorism in territorial waters.

Libyan Sovereignty Is a Red Line

The committee emphasized in its statement. Protecting Libyan sovereignty over its territorial waters and airspace is a red line. It affirmed that any military or security operation within this area is a violation. Such an operation without prior coordination and approval from competent Libyan authorities is unacceptable. It is considered a blatant violation of international and national laws.

Condemnation of the Attack and Warning of its Repercussions

The committee condemned the attack on the civilian tanker. It considered this a maritime terrorist act. This act threatens the safety of international navigation. It constitutes a dangerous precedent. This could affect global trade in the Mediterranean Sea.

Rejection of Claims that Drones Launched from Libya

The committee rejected any claims. These claims suggest that the drones which targeted the tanker launched from Libyan territory. It called for an urgent and transparent investigation. This investigation should be in cooperation with relevant international bodies. Its purpose is to determine the true source of the attack.

Warning Against Its Approach to Oil Facilities

It warned that the damaged tanker’s proximity. Its proximity to vital Libyan oil installations, like the Mellitah complex. This represents a significant security and economic threat. The committee called for activating all security and military emergency plans. These plans are to protect the coasts and vital oil facilities.

Demand for an International Investigation and Compensation for Libya

The committee also affirmed its insistence. It insisted on a comprehensive international investigation into the attack incident. This investigation should identify those responsible and bring them to justice. It also emphasized Libya’s right to claim compensation. This compensation is for any security or economic damages.
