Geneva – The UN Human Rights Council adopted a resolution. It concerns the human rights situation in the Occupied Palestinian Territory. This includes East Jerusalem. The resolution focuses on ensuring accountability. It also aims to achieve justice. 24 countries voted in favor of the resolution. Four countries opposed it. 19 countries abstained from voting.
The Palestinian Ministry of Foreign Affairs welcomed the resolution’s adoption. It stated the resolution emphasizes holding perpetrators accountable. This includes violations and crimes against the Palestinian people. It also ensures an end to impunity. This is crucial for achieving justice.
The Ministry affirmed the resolution holds special importance. This is due to current circumstances. Grave and systematic violations of international law continue. This includes international humanitarian law and human rights law. Settler attacks are escalating.
This occurs amid a lack of accountability. The Ministry noted the resolution’s adoption reflects international community responsibility. Member states, in particular, must adhere to international law. This includes ensuring respect for the Geneva Conventions. They must not recognize the illegal situation stemming from the occupation. They must also not provide any support contributing to its continuation.
This stance is based on the International Court of Justice’s advisory opinion. It also stressed the resolution affirms states’ responsibility. They must refrain from providing any form of assistance. This includes supplying occupation authorities with weapons or equipment. Such provisions could be used to commit violations against Palestinians. This would contravene international law provisions. It also violates relevant UN resolutions.
