Benghazi – Readings from air quality monitoring stations of the Libyan government’s Ministry of Environment indicated high pollution. The highest levels of air pollution and low visibility were recorded. This occurred between the Benghazi plain and the Al-Wahat region. A storm hit eastern Libya, Tuesday.
This caused the pollution. This is attributed to the area’s direct location. It lies in the path of southern winds. These winds originate from the far southwest of Libya. They also come from northern Niger. The report noted a lack of geographical barriers. These include terrain, mountains, and vegetation cover. Their absence allowed dust to arrive easily.
This contrasts with the Jebel Akhdar region. Jebel Akhdar limits the impact of such dust. High wind speeds also increased dust concentration. They lifted fine particulate matter. This made the area more vulnerable to pollution. The region’s exposure to winds contributed to this.
