SRSG TETTEH ADVOCATES FOR INTERNATIONAL SUPPORT FOR LIBYA’S POLITICAL PROCESS IN NEW YORK
A wide view of the Security Council meeting on the situation in Libya. The Council heard a Report of the Secretary-General on the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL).

The American representative to the Security Council affirmed her country’s welcome of the de-escalation of tensions in Tripoli, stressing the necessity of security and military integration between eastern and western Libya, and considering the unification of political institutions as a basis for stability and for reaching a unified government that extends its control over the entire country.

The British representative welcomed the agreement concluded between the Government of National Unity and the Deterrence Apparatus, considering it an important step in reducing tensions in Tripoli and stressing the priority of protecting civilians and infrastructure.

Algerian Support for the Mission’s Efforts and Warning Against Interventions and Mismanagement of Assets
The Algerian representative expressed his country’s full support for the efforts of the United Nations mission in promoting peace and stability, considering that a political solution remains elusive with the continuation of foreign interventions. He expressed grave concern about the mismanagement of frozen assets and Libyan investments abroad, and about the challenges of unifying the public budget, while welcoming the reform of the military sector and the dismantling of groups outside the state’s authority.

The French representative stressed the necessity for the Security Council to support the UN roadmap for holding national elections, expressing concern over the lack of political and security stability. He stressed that foreign interventions undermine Libyan sovereignty and called for the pursuit of urgent economic reforms demanded by the Libyans.
