Sirte Port Reopens After 14 Years with the Arrival of First Commercial Ship

Sirte, Libya – In a milestone event for Libya’s trade and logistics sector, the Sirte Free Zone Port officially resumed operations after nearly 14 years with the arrival of the first commercial ship. The vessel, Sea Horizon, sailing under the flag of Palau, arrived from Alexandria Port, Egypt, carrying construction materials and equipment destined for major infrastructure projects in Sirte.

A formal customs clearance ceremony was held at the port, attended by key officials including the Director of the Gulf Customs Directorate, the Director of Sirte Free Zone Port Customs, and the Mayor of Sirte. This event marks a significant step in activating the port’s role as a regional trade hub and facilitating the movement of goods.

The reopening of the port is part of a broader strategy to boost economic activity in Sirte. Supported by the General Command of the Armed Forces, extensive efforts have been made to ensure the port’s security and operational readiness.

Officials have confirmed that this is just the beginning, with more ships scheduled to arrive in the coming weeks. Among them is a Turkish vessel carrying materials for the Sirte International Stadium and Port Hotel projects, as well as a UAE ship transporting equipment for the Sirte-Sokna-Sebha Road and the Conference & Exhibition Complex.

With this development, the Sirte Free Zone Port is set to become a key center for trade and logistics, attracting international investment, creating new job opportunities, and strengthening Libya’s position in the regional maritime trade network.
