UN Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) said it facilitated preliminary consultations with 14 independent Libyan financial and economic experts from across the country.
Discussions, held on 10 and 11 February, focused on guiding principles for economic policies that address the root causes of conflict, enhance governance, and promote accountability, according to UNSMIL.
Participants explored priorities for stabilizing and diversifying Libya’s economy, for instilling good governance, and practical steps that can be realistically implemented in Libya’s political and economic environment in the short, medium and long-term, the Mission pointed out.
Participants also recognized the critical need for greater public engagement in support of economic reforms and on the need to address the immediate gap in spending and revenues due to the absence of a balanced, unified budget law that is enforceable and subject to robust oversight, it added.
