The European Union’s Foreign Affairs Council will convene a meeting today in Brussels, where the European foreign ministers will discuss a number of issues including the situation in Libya, announced Germany’s foreign ministry.
The Head of the European Union’s Border Assistance Mission in Libya (EUBAM), Natalina Cea, and the Commander of the Italian Bilateral Mission of Assistance and Support in Libya (MIASIT LIBYA) Rear Admiral Placido Torresi, signed a Working Arrangement to establish operational cooperation between the two Missions.
“Promoting dialogue between all actors in Libya is a necessary for building an effective political roadmap that preserves stability and unity and leads to elections in the near period,” said Luis Miguel Bueno, the European Union’s spokesperson for the Middle East and North Africa.
The European Union Border Assistance Mission in Libya (EUBAM) intends to train 25 members of the Libyan Border Guards in collaboration with the Spanish National Police.
Khaled al-Mishri, chairman of Libya’s High Council of State, met today with Sabadell Jose, the European Union’s Ambassador to Libya, in Tripoli where they discussed “the latest developments related to the electoral process,” according to a brief statement by the council.
Libya, as representative of the Arab Maghreb Union, took part on Saturday in a virtual meeting of the African Union Bureau and Heads of Regional Economic Communities.
Libyan Foreign Minister Najla Mangoush visited on Saturday a migrants’ reception center in Tripoli along with Mohammed Al-Khoja, a militia leader who was recently appointed to head the Department for Combating Irregular Migration (DCIM) despite being accused of abuse against migrants.
The European Union’s Ambassador to Libya, Sabadell Jose, met on Wednesday with Labor Minister Ali Abed Reda in Tripoli where they discussed supporting efforts to create jobs in the country.
The European Union expressed its concern today over the violence perpetrated by security forces in Tripoli against dozens of migrants who have been camping outside the center of U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) since October.
