The United Nations Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) will hold a “consultative session” today in Tunisia to discuss the constitutional basis for Libyan elections with representatives from the High Council of State only, the U.N. announced on Monday.
Earlier this month, U.N. Advisor on Libya Stephanie Williams proposed an initiative to form a joint committee from the House of Representatives (HoR) and High Council of State (HCS) to agree on a firm constitutional basis for national elections. Williams invited HoR and HCS to select representatives to participate in the committee.
Even though both sides welcomed the initiative, the U.N. said it only received the list of HCS participants, but not HoR participants.
However, the U.N. Mission pointed out that it remains in “active communication” with the office of House Speaker Aguila Saleh, and said it expects that “the HoR will submit the list of its representatives and join the meeting within the coming days.”
