New York – The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) announced a projection. One million Syrian refugees will return home during 2026. Their country is undergoing a gradual recovery. This follows the fall of the Assad regime last December.
Gonzalo Yusa is the UNHCR representative in Syria. He stated that 1.3 million Syrian refugees have already returned home. This has occurred since December 2024. An additional one million refugees are expected to return. These refugees are currently dispersed across various countries worldwide.
The UN official noted a rapid decline in fear. This fear had dominated Syrian society under the previous regime. It has been replaced by a widespread sense of hope.
The UN envoy emphasized the need for international financial support. This support will help returning Syrian refugees. It will enable them to settle in their home country. Many years of suffering abroad preceded their return.
The United States is expected to lift sanctions on Syria. This action should initiate a phase of reconstruction. It will also foster development projects. Furthermore, it will open broad investment opportunities for the private sector. This influx will create job opportunities. These jobs will benefit the returning refugee populations.
