Saleh Al-Sadiq, Chairman of the High Technical Committee for Monitoring Groundwater Surfacing, Cracks, and Landslides, has announced the discovery of the oldest ground subsidence and cracking in the Awlad Abu Aisha region of the Western Mountains (Jabal al-Gharbi). The discovery was made during the committee’s third field visit to the area this week.
In a statement to the Libyan News Agency, Al-Sadiq explained that the committee continued its inspection and survey of various subsidence and crack sites yesterday. They identified a large circular depression located approximately three kilometers away. Chronological analysis revealed that this specific subsidence dates back to December 2005.
The Chairman emphasized that this site is the oldest point discovered to date. He noted that it will be included in the ongoing cadastral, geotechnical, and geophysical studies conducted by the committee to determine the causes of the subsidence and assess the risks it poses to the immediate and surrounding areas.
Al-Sadiq concluded his statement by confirming that full technical details and study results will be released in subsequent publications and reports once they are finalized.
