Geneva – Members of the Libyan parliamentary delegation to the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU), Rabia Aburas, Fatima Al-Suwai’i, and Sultana Al-Mismari, participated in the opening of the 151st Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union and the 216th session of its Governing Council, held at the Geneva International Conference Centre from October 19 to 23, 2025.
The opening ceremony was attended by heads of parliamentary delegations from various countries around the world, along with representatives from United Nations organizations and regional and international organizations.
The official spokesperson for the House of Representatives, Abdullah Blihaq, stated that the session addressed the General Assembly’s priorities for 2025, including promoting democracy, supporting humanitarian action, protecting human rights, addressing armed conflicts and migration, and strengthening commitment to humanitarian standards in times of crisis.
Member of the House of Representatives Rabia Aburas delivered a speech during the session, in which she highlighted the global escalation of armed conflicts and the continuous violations of international humanitarian law.
She also stressed that respecting international humanitarian law is not a political choice but a legal and moral obligation, calling for the strengthening of multilateral cooperation to support humanitarian action and protect civilians.
For her part, Aburas noted the importance of linking development with peace and justice to enhance human stability, pointing to the tragedy experienced by the Palestinian people under occupation and demanding that the international community take action to protect civilians and guarantee the rights of peoples to freedom and independence.
She explained that the Libyan House of Representatives has prepared a national strategy for humanitarian action within the governance of migration and displacement files, which resulted in the establishment of the Libyan Observatory for Migration as a national tool for monitoring and analysis, as part of parliamentary diplomacy efforts and humanitarian solidarity with the African continent and crisis-affected countries.
The members of the Libyan delegation are participating in the sessions and workshops of the standing committees of the Inter-Parliamentary Union, including the Committee on Human Rights, the Committee to Promote Respect for International Humanitarian Law, the Advisory Group on Counter-Terrorism and Violent Extremism, the Forum of Women Parliamentarians, and the committees on Sustainable Development and International Peace and Security, stressing the importance of international parliamentary cooperation to promote human values and social justice, and to support humanitarian action in times of crisis.
This participation is part of the Libyan House of Representatives’ efforts to enhance parliamentary diplomacy and humanitarian solidarity with regional and international humanitarian issues, and to support peoples affected by conflicts in the Middle East, Africa, and the world.
