Members of Libya’s House of Representatives has called on the House Speaker Aguila Saleh to consider appointing former interior minister Fathi Bashagha as the country’s prime minister, in replacement of Abdul Hamid Dbeibeh, according to a report by Saudi channel Al-Arabiya.
The 22 lawmakers, who mainly represent districts in the western region of Tripolitania, said they had the support of 75 other MPs.
The MPs justified their move with the need to reach a radical solution that will bring the country to safety after the postponement of the presidential elections, which were originally scheduled for last December 24, 2021.
This comes after 15 different other MPs asked the parliament to investigate Dbeibeh over corruption allegations, and form an interim technocratic government tasked specifically with the unification of sovereign institutions and setting a date for elections.
