The Office of the Attorney General announced on Sunday the seizure of a large quantity of fuel amounting to about 86,000 litres of petrol and diesel inside two illegal warehouses in the municipality of Al-Ajilat, in the west of the country, during a raid carried out by the judicial control unit of the prosecution.
In an official statement, the office explained that the Judicial Enforcement Unit moved to two locations in the Sidra and Al-Jadida areas within the municipality of Al-Ajilat, after obtaining permission from the Public Prosecution, as part of following up on smuggling and illegal trading in fuel.
The raid resulted in the seizure of containers containing petrol and diesel fuel, estimated at 86,000 litres. Immediate instructions were issued to seize the confiscated quantities and close the two sites, in addition to initiating procedures to prosecute those involved in these illegal activities.
This step comes in the context of a series of measures taken by the Attorney General’s Office to combat fuel smuggling, following the recent fuel supply crisis in the capital Tripoli and a number of western cities, which sparked widespread resentment among citizens.
In the past few days, the Judicial Enforcement Unit carried out similar raids targeting illegal warehouses and storage facilities in the cities of Misrata, Zliten and Zawiya, confiscating large quantities of fuel intended for smuggling and selling it illegally on the black market.
