Brussels – Libya’s Department for Combating Illegal Migration participated in a high-level meeting in Brussels attended by representatives from the European Union, the United Nations mission, and several international organizations focused on migration issues.
The meeting reviewed Libya’s efforts to combat illegal migration and improve humanitarian management. The Libyan delegation included Major General Salah Mahmoud Al-Khififi, head of the department, and Major General Abdulrahman Al-Ansari, director of the department’s southern branches. They attended under directives from the General Command of the Armed Forces, supported by Deputy Commander-in-Chief General Saddam Haftar and Interior Minister Major General Essam Abu Zariba.
Participants discussed strategies to address illegal migration, strengthen international cooperation against migrant smuggling and human trafficking networks, and support border security and voluntary return programs.
Major General Al-Khififi emphasized that Libya’s achievements are due to ongoing support from military leadership. He said the department had upgraded its system to include the legal apprehension of migrants, their transfer to shelters, and provision of health and humanitarian services until repatriation or deportation procedures are completed.
The Libyan delegation outlined field results from various regions, including operations to break up smuggling rings, secure shelters, supervise deportations, and enhance voluntary return programs with international organizations.
Al-Khififi stressed that Libya acts as the first line of defense against illegal migration flows. He called for greater support for Libyan security agencies to strengthen border security, combat transnational crime, and cement international cooperation on migration.
He concluded by pledging the department would continue its duties in line with directives from the general command, aiming to strengthen national security, uphold migrants’ dignity, and deepen international partnerships in managing migration.
