Kufra – The city of Kufra, yesterday, Friday, commemorated the tenth anniversary of what became known as the “Epic of the Mother of All Battles,” which took place at dawn on September 20, 2015, when the city was subjected to a surprise attack launched by armed opposition groups from Chad and Sudan.
Sheikh Masoud Al-Mudir, one of the city’s elders and the acting mayor of the municipality, confirmed to the Libyan News Agency that the hostile force that attacked Kufra consisted of about 83 armed vehicles and more than 800 personnel, who entered the city at 3:00 AM, with confrontations breaking out just two hours later.
Sheikh Al-Mudir added that the clashes resulted in the martyrdom of 15 people, including civilians, in addition to a number of wounded, some of whom suffered severe injuries leading to permanent disability. The confrontations also caused the displacement of several families from the combat zones.
He pointed out that the people of Kufra bravely repelled the attack and, within a few hours, managed to drive back the attackers, killing and capturing a large number of them, which turned the battle into a decisive moment in the city’s modern history, considering it “the last direct Libyan confrontation against a foreign invasion.”
The acting mayor stressed that Kufra, despite its remote geographical location in the south of the country and its open borders with Egypt, Chad, and Sudan, will remain Libya’s first line of defense, noting that protecting the city is a national and religious duty that cannot be neglected.
Sheikh Al-Mudir called on official authorities to immortalize this anniversary in the national consciousness, urging for it to be made an official occasion within contemporary Libyan history, to serve as a reminder of the sacrifices of the people of Kufra and a clear message that the city will always defend the nation with all its might.
