Acting Undersecretary of Libyan Foreign Ministry, Mohamed Issa, headed the Libyan delegation participating in the work of the 157th regular session of the Council of the Arab League at the level of foreign ministers, held in Cairo on Wednesday.
In a statement Thursday, the Foreign Ministry said that Issa presented the speech of the Minister, Najla Elmangoush, in which she indicated that “Libya has witnessed, over the years, deep political divisions that were reflected on the ground in civil battles, a struggle over resources and power, and security chaos, reaching to a war between brothers, which led to the displacement of hundreds of families and the exploitation of criminals from human smugglers and weapons for this chaos, especially on the border areas.
She pointed out that this constituted a real danger not only to Libya but to the region as a whole. However, hope was achieved in unifying the executive authority after a seven-year division represented by the Government of National Unity (GNU), through dialogues sponsored by the United Nations, and as a consequence the country witnessed a tangible recovery and stability.”
She added: “On the security front, the hopes of the Libyans have come to aspire for a more stable and prosperous state in which free and fair parliamentary and presidential elections are held, and in which the Libyans agree on a constitutional basis, which did not happen as a result of the lack of basic primary principles of fair electoral laws that guarantee freedom of participation without fear or intimidation from any party.”
In her speech presented by the Acting Undersecretary of the Ministry, Elmangoush explained that “the Libyan people are tired of transitional periods, and they are certain that the Arab brothers support this approach, leading to general legislative and presidential elections.
The conclusion of this speech was by saying that the world is witnessing a sensitive and frightening stage following the military aggression against Ukraine, “which we condemn just as we condemn every aggression against any country and any person in this world.”
