Turkey has offered to contribute to energy infrastructure projects in Libya, as well as electricity transmission and distribution projects.
This came in a statement by the Turkish Minister of Energy and Natural Resources, Alparslan Bayraktar, to Anadolu Agency, in which he explained that the two countries will upgrade cooperation relations in the field of energy.
In his statement on the sidelines of his participation in the Libya Energy and Economy Summit, he pointed out that Turkish-Libyan relations are brotherly and long-standing, extending 500 years, noting that Turkish activities in the energy sector gained greater importance after the maritime jurisdiction agreement signed in 2019.
Memorandum of Understanding in Oil and Gas
The Turkish minister referred to his country signing with Libya last year a memorandum of understanding in the field of oil and gas with the Government of National Unity.
He pointed out that he brought with him officials from public and private sector companies in Turkey during his visit to Libya to enhance cooperation between the two countries in the fields of energy, oil, natural gas as well as mines and electricity.
Bayraktar said that Turkey and Libya will continue their cooperation in many areas in a sustainable and long-term manner, including the energy sector, stressing that Turkey motivates its companies to invest in Libya, because resources here will make a major contribution to the development of the Libyan people and Libya as a state, and we will enable our companies to make great progress.
On November 27, 2019, Turkey and the former Government of National Accord signed two memoranda of understanding concerning security and military cooperation and delimitation of maritime jurisdiction areas, which sparked a lot of controversy locally and internationally.
